Tata Power Renewable’s Omkareshwar Floating Solar Pioneer: Omkareshwar Project to Meet Over 21% of Bhopal’s Peak Demand with Clean Energy 30th January, 2025

TPREL’s Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project has a capacity of 126 MWp and features 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules

The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Power Project, developed by Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a leading player in India’s renewable energy sector and a subsidiary of Tata Power, represents a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey. Commissioned in November 2024, this landmark project highlights TPREL’s unwavering commitment to delivering innovative renewable energy solutions that address the nation’s growing energy needs while preserving environmental balance.

Awarded by NHDC Limited, the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Power Project has a capacity of 126 MWp, featuring 213,460 solar modules. It generates approximately 204,580 MWh of clean energy annually, reducing nearly 173,893 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. This significant contribution aligns with India’s broader efforts to mitigate climate change and achieve net-zero emissions.

Located in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs, the floating solar project is a marvel of engineering. By leveraging advanced floating solar technology, TPREL has ensured the conservation of approximately 32.5 lakh cubic meters of water annually by minimizing evaporation, thereby supporting both renewable energy generation and water conservation.

Despite challenges such as high wind conditions, fluctuating water levels, and limited site accessibility, the project was successfully executed within the stipulated timeline, showcasing TPREL’s exceptional engineering and execution capabilities.

The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Power Project is a testament to TPREL’s leadership in renewable energy innovation and marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward a greener future. Setting a benchmark for similar projects, it exemplifies how advanced technologies and strategic planning can transform India’s energy landscape, contributing to a more sustainable tomorrow.

As a leader in renewable energy, TPREL continues to drive the adoption of clean technologies, addressing climate change, conserving natural resources, and powering a sustainable tomorrow. With this achievement, TPREL’s total renewable energy capacity now stands at 10.9 GW with 5.5GW of projects in various stages of implementation. Its operational capacity has reached 5.4 GW, comprising 4.4 GW of solar and 1 GW of wind energy projects.
